PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The American University in Dubai (AUD) began with a fact-finding mission in 1991, led by Elias Bou Saab from the American College in Atlanta. At that time, Dubai was still emerging as a key destination in the Middle East. Bou Saab’s visit aimed to build connections with the regional ministries and schools, setting the stage for AUD’s establishment.
In 1995, with unwavering support of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, AUD was offcially founded. The university’s mission was to introduce the American educational system to the region while respecting local cultural values. This approach has been integral to AUD’s ongoing success and relevance.
AUD opened as a branch campus of the American College in Atlanta in October 1995 with 165 students. By 2000, it was officially licensed by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and moved to its new campus in “New Dubai”. Now an independent institution, AUD educates over 2,000 students from more than 100 nationalities and is the first institution outside the U.S. and Latin America accredited by the Southern Association of colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). ZKTeco is honoured to have provided the AUD with an Access Control Solution.
REQUIREMENT
More Effective and Reliable Identity Authentication for Access Control
The AUD currently has approximately 2,000 students and 100 staffs. Before deployment of the solution, the flow of commute often caused long queue and crowd during the peak flow at the main entrance of the campus. The reason causing the crowd involved the lack of efficiency of access control. For the access control of the main entrance, there were access control systems that required swipe-card verification in order to access and exit. If there was any delay of card swiping, the entire flow will be dragged. Apart from the slow speed of access control, it also caused difficulty in security, as manual security monitoring is impossible to precisely identify every staff, posing security threat caused by illegal access to the building, and potentially harming the staffs’ and students’ safety.
SOLUTION DETAILS
ZKTeco has deployed an entrance control solution for the main entrance of the campus, consisting of SpeedFace-V5L [RFID] Facial Authentication Standalone Terminals, Mars-B1000 Series Swing Barriers, and SBTL2011S Swing Barriers. The combination of Mars-1000 barriers and SBTL2011S barriers form a multi-channel entrance, and every channel is installed with two SpeedFace-V5L terminals, one for entry and one for exit. All the devices are connected to and centrally managed by the ZKBio CVSecurity Integrated Security Management Software Platform.
All staff and students are pre-registered with their personal information and biometric data, which are saved in the ZKBio CVSecurity. Upon access to and exit from the campus, they no longer are required to swipe their staff cards or student cards, instead they only need to have their faces scanned by the SpeedFace-V5L terminals, the terminals automatically perform facial authentication. Upon successful identity authentication, they will be granted access and exit.
For normal access and exit, staff and student may go through the channels of Mars-B1000 swing barriers. For people carrying large objects or goods, or people with reduced mobility like wheelchair users, they may go through the channel of SBTL2011S swing barriers with 80cm width.

Its advanced facial authentication algorithm enables ultimately quick authentication of face in less than 1 second. SpeedFace-V5L also enables anti-spoofing, which effectively prevent print attack (laser, color and black & white photos), videos attack and 3D mask attack. Staffs and students no longer need to take out their staff cards or students for swiping, saving the time and enhancing the efficiency of access control, and also effectively minimizing the possible mistakes by security staffs’ manual monitoring.
Flexible and Convenient Access Control Management Setting
As all the SpeedFace-V5L terminals, Mars-B1000 barriers and SBTL2011S barrier are connected to the ZKBio CVSecurity Comprehensive Security Management Software Platform, it enables direct management and monitoring of the entire system on the ZKBio CVSecurity’s interface. ZKBio CVSecurity is embedded with different kinds of applied modules, its access control module enables the security staff to add, edit and delete personnel’s information, manage cards, or even change the access rights, for example, access rights according to different areas and time slots.
